Junho-Dezembro, 1940 Portugal, Festas do Duplo Centenario

SNI posters mythologized Portugal’s historic achievements, especially the country’s continued independence and its success, against great odds, in conquering and “civilizing” other territories. Salazar promoted past achievements to build a united sense of moral character in the nation, idealizing a willingness to sacrifice individual needs to the greater good. History and ideology intertwined in this regard. Historic towns like Évora, Sintra or Coimbra were used as symbols of a greater time, while the cuisine, pastries, wine, and olive trees became iconography that reminded the Portuguese people that history was in their own hands.
