SNI posters mythologized Portugal’s historic achievements, especially the country’s continued independence and its success, against great odds, in conquering and “civilizing” other territories. Salazar promoted past achievements to build a united sense of moral character in the nation, idealizing a willingness to sacrifice individual needs to the greater good. History and ideology intertwined in this regard. Historic towns like Évora, Sintra or Coimbra were used as symbols of a greater time, while the cuisine, pastries, wine, and olive trees became iconography that reminded the Portuguese people that history was in their own hands.
